Bando

Bando is a generic Burmese term that means "the way of the warrior." During the Japanese occupation in Burma of World War II the term "Bando" was first used to identify the Burmese martial systems. These Burmese fighting systems varied in style and use between different ethnic groups, regions and tribes within Burma.

Traditionally, Bando encompasses Banshay (weapons), Lethwei (kick boxing), Naban (grappling), and Thaing (empty hand fighting). Bando also contains animal systems that compliment a practitioner's body type, size and physical strength, as well as their psychological characteristics and personal demeanor. All of the animal systems incorporate standup and ground tactics including striking, grappling, and weapons.

Lethwei

Lethwei also known as Burmese Boxing and Myanmar Traditional Boxing, may well be the most brutal and exciting form of kickboxing the world has ever witnessed. Lethwei is in many ways similar to its younger sibling, Muay Thai, from neighboring Thailand. If Thai Boxing is the science of 8 limbs than Lethwei is the science of 9 limbs due to the allowance of head-butts. Unlike Muay Thai, Lethwei allows competitors to trap incoming weapons (such as arms and legs) and strike back, throw or take down the attacking opponent. Lethwei competitors in Myanmar (Burma) have held on tight to their traditional roots by continuing to fight without boxing gloves. Instead of gloves, hand wraps consisting of hemp or cloth are the only protection employed in the ring.

Frederick Fight Club is proud to be one of the only gyms in the United States to offer the traditional style of Lethwei training and curriculum.

For those who are not interested in sparring or competing, Lethwei training provides a path to unparalleled physical and mental fitness as well as greater confidence and a higher sense of self achievement.

Boxing

Frederick Fight Club has a comprehensive boxing program featuring some of the best boxing coaches available. Wayne Disney is the head boxing trainer who has been a true student of the game all his life. In addition to being an accomplished competitor, Coach Disney has a long decorated coaching career in the Frederick area. Through his exceptional boxing ability, positive attitude and unmatched dedication to the betterment of others, Coach Disney has made an invaluable contribution to the people of Frederick over the past several years.

Wrestling

Frederick Fight Club's Wrestling program has been developed to train competitors through every stage of their wrestling career to include:

- Current and aspiring high school / collegiate wrestlers
- Kids (ages 5 -13)

The program also welcomes young adults who just want to get in great shape and learn the sport. Wrestling practice offers awesome aerobic, muscular and core-strength benefits and enhances overall coordination as well. Our wrestling coaches are former decorated collegiate wrestlers themselves and know the game very well!

In addition to our expert staff, FFC will host the following events throughout the year:

- Wrestling camps and clinics
- Seminars from the top wrestling coaches in the country
- Wrestling matches

Characterized by constant motion and continuous muscular tension, wrestling is a great way for school-aged students to improve their stamina, strength, power and agility. In addition, FFC/s wrestling program is designed to help instill self-confidence and improve the self-esteem of all students.

The tools of our Wrestling trade are a Resilite competition grade wrestling mat and an additional 2000 square feet of top quality grappling mats.
One of the great features of any wrestling program is that size doesn't matter! Wrestlers are generally paired up by size, weight, age, experience and gender so the playing-field is rather equal right from the start. Young females are learning to wrestle more now than ever and the confidence they gain can last a lifetime! Wrestling is an inherently competitive sport, but don't worry! As with all of FFC's programs, beginners will learn and master the basics well before they move into light competition. For those with a more advanced skill-set, our instructors will ensure that you get the training and competition you desire to take your game to the next level!

Mixed Martial Arts

Frederick Fight Club is proud to be the largest state-of-the-art MMA training facility on the east coast. FFC also prides itself to be the only MMA training facility in the area to have open gym time everyday! Open gym time allows members the ability to come in and train anytime during FFC business hours.

Frederick Fight Club's Mixed Martial Arts classes teach students how to combine the best of our Boxing, Burmese Kickboxing, Wrestling and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu techniques. In addition, the instructors will focus on take-downs, working in/against the cage and other skills designed to provide the most versatile training experience offered at FFC!
This curriculum is great for beginners and advanced students alike as our trainers will accommodate the varying levels of experience within each class. With safety as the primary goal and a fun, encouraging environment as a close-second, we are certain that all of our students: male or female, beginner or advanced, adult or teen, will enjoy participating in the world-wide craze known as Mixed Martial Arts!

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ)

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is currently the most renowned ground-fighting system in the world. Having gained mainstream popularity via The Ultimate Fighting Championship, BJJ is an extremely effective and necessary component of any mixed-martial-arts or self-defense program. This system emphasizes the utilization of leverage and technique, rather than strength, which gives smaller individuals the potential to overcome larger opponents.

Coupled with effective standup techniques (strikes, standup-grappling and take-downs), Brazilian Jiu Jitsu significantly increases a martial artist's versatility. Practicing BJJ is also one of the best workouts you'll ever get! So, if you are interested in enhancing your level of physical fitness and becoming a well-rounded martial artist, BJJ is for you!

At Frederick Fight Club, we are proud to offer Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under the expert and very well-respected guidance of 5th degree black-belt, Professor Roberto "Maguilla" who is considered one of "The Top 5 Best Instructors of the Decade" by public opinion (Black Belt Magazine, ABUDABI page. Sep 2000-Dec 2001).

Personally endorsed by Grandmaster Carlson Gracie Sr., and the highest ranking BJJ instructor based in Maryland, Professor Maguilla has made it his life's mission to transmit the highest in BJJ instruction and impart training ethics of champions. (A quote from Maguilla's Website
www.bjjonline.com)

We know this to be true! One of FFC's primary-instructors, Ken Stephens, has trained under Professor Maguilla for approximately 8 years. Here's what Ken has to say about Professor Maguilla:

I've practiced martial arts for more than 30 years and I assure you, Maguilla is the real-deal! As a S.W.A.T. officer, it is my job to deal with some of the most dangerous criminals in this country. My team was introduced to Maguilla years ago and his ability to translate BJJ into a street-effective combat system for law-enforcement is truly incredible! If he can train us to handle ourselves at work, he can train anyone to any desired level. There is no one else I would recommend for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training.

Kids Program

The Frederick Fight Club Kids Program is a combination of Boxing, Burmese Kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and the Korean art of self-defense known as Hap Ki Do. Designed with the impressionable state of our younger students (ages 8 to 12) in mind, this program focuses on instilling confidence, coordination, self-esteem and respect for authority (yes, that includes Mom & Dad!).

The techniques taught are not watered down, instead they are the same as those taught to our adult students. However, it is the manner in which these techniques are taught that separates this class from its adult version. For instance, adults are taught to assume a fighting stance while our kids are taught to assume a Ready Stance. Subtle variations in nomenclature and the explanations of techniques help to ensure that our young members understand that the techniques are not to be used to harm others.

Parents can rest assured; Frederick Fight Club doesn't teach kids how to get into fights. Instead, we help to provide a physical and mental foundation which can help your children grow into more responsible teens and adults (who, by the way, happen to know how to effectively protect themselves!).

Self Defense

"Your Fighting Chance" is a non-profit organization that sponsers a Free to the Public self defense class every Saturday afternoon at 1:15 at The Frederick Fight Club. This class will educate women about violence against women, how to avoid bad situations and what to do if you find yourself in one. We believe self defence is a must for every woman. "Your Fighting Chance" and "The Frederick Fight Club" believe that you are worth fighting for.
